Energy and Environment

National Centers for Environmental Information
The demand for high-value environmental data and information has dramatically increased in recent years. To improve our ability to meet that demand, NOAA’s former three data centers—the National Climatic Data Center, the National Geophysical Data Center, and the National Oceanographic Data Center, which includes the National Coastal Data Development Center—have merged into the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI).

NCEI is responsible for hosting and providing access to one of the most significant archives on Earth, with comprehensive oceanic, atmospheric, and geophysical data. From the depths of the ocean to the surface of the sun and from million-year-old sediment records to near real-time satellite images, NCEI is the Nation’s leading authority for environmental information.

National Space and Aeronautics Administration
NASA’s Earth Observatory provides a wealth of physical data and remote sensing images related to environmental characteristics such as sea surface temperatures, ice cover, carbon monoxide, fires and rainfall.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Climatic Data Center
The NOAA Climatic Data Center allows download for detailed climate data for US and international locations for annual, monthly, daily, and in some cases hourly intervals.

The Solar Foundation
The Solar Foundation publishes an annual survey on employment in the solar generation sector.

U.S. Energy Information Administration
The EIA provides data at the national and state level related to energy consumption, production, marketing, distribution, efficiency, expenditures, and environmental characteristics.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
EPA’s Datafinder is not elegant, but it provides access to a variety of topics regulated by EPA such as drinking water, air pollution, toxic substances, groundwater, and climate change.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Annual Survey of Green Goods and Services
The BLS Annual Survey of Green Goods and Services provided employment estimates for green jobs by industry, state, type of ownership and establishment.  NOTE:  Data are only available until 2010, with some summary data for 2011, because the program was eliminated in 2013.

National Climatic Data Center (NCDC)
Storm Data is provided by the National Weather Service (NWS) and contain statistics on personal injuries and damage estimates. Storm Data covers the United States of America. The data began as early as 1950 through to the present, updated monthly with up to a 120 day delay possible.
