Pre-Conference Trainings

Practice-Based Performance Management: International Symposium for Developing Effective Performance Measurement Systems in Government
8:00am-5:00pm, Saturday, April 2

In this full-day symposium, you will learn how to build and sustain a performance management system through panel and workshop presentations conducted by national and international speakers. In addition, you will have opportunities for networking with your peers and share and compare your experiences with performance management. The symposium will consist of four tracks organized around the following topics: Using and Analyzing Performance Information, Performance-Based Budgeting, Technology and Citizens, and Linking Quality and Outcomes. There will be an opening plenary, four panel presentations in the morning and four training sessions in the afternoon followed by a closing plenary and a reception.
Sponsored by ASPA’s Center for Accountability and Performance (CAP) and the IBM Endowment for the Business of Government.

New Professionals Leadership Workshop
8:30am-4:00pm, Saturday, April 2

This workshop will give you tools necessary for building effective teams of diverse people and help you to reduce the potential for interpersonal conflict and organizational gridlock. Participants will identify their leadership strengths, uncover blind spots that reduce motivation, recognize barriers to teamwork and practice skills for building productive work relationships.

Transforming Your Organization: Leading Your Agency through Change
8:30am-12:00pm, Saturday, April 2

This pre-conference workshop gives you practical insights into how to lead change in your organization. You’ll leave this seminar with important insights into your role as a change agent and a personal plan to begin the step-by-step process of transforming your organization.
Sponsored by ASPA’s Section on Professional and Organizational Development (SPOD). Note: this workshop will be held at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee—a short 2 block walk from the Hyatt.

Grants: Less Money, More Competition -- What's In It For Me?

This session will be facilitated by Michael Gershowitz, Gershowitz Grant & Evaluation Services, Des Moines, Iowa. Gershowitz, who has facilitated similar sessions at previous ASPA conferences, works with clients both inside and outside the United States. He will begin serving a three-year term on ASPA's National Council at the conclusion of the 2005 ASPA National Conference.

Local Tours

Discover Cultural Milwaukee
Friday, April 1, 2005
9:00am-5:00pm

Tour and learn about Milwaukee's unique cultural history and art collections through this full-day event. Experience a desert oasis, a tropical jungle, floral gardens, see an Italian Renaissance Villa, understand the impact advertising has on our culture, visit a memorial to the struggle for racial equality in our country, and witness one of the most beautiful architectural achievements recently created right on Milwaukee’s own Lakefront.
Lunch, snacks and water will be provided.

Miller Tour
Monday, April 4, 2005
9:30am-2:30pm

This half-day tour will take you first to the newly built Miller Park baseball stadium for a guided tour. Then, we’ll head to historic Miller Brewery, a mainstay in Milwaukee's local economy and culture since 1855. Lunch will be back at the ballpark, at Friday’s Front Row Grill, which overlooks the baseball field.
Lunch will be provided.

H.O.G.S. and Dogs
Tuesday, April 5, 2005
9:00am-2:00pm

This half-day event starts with a tour of Milwaukee's own Harley-Davidson's Powertrain Operations Plant, just outside of the city. The tour features an engine time line, and you'll have a chance to sit on the latest models and visit the gift shop. Then, we'll take you to the famous Usinger's Sausage Company store, located on Old World Third Street, next to the manufacturing plant.
Lunch will be provided.
